How to Sign Up for the Virtual StoryTent

Created in response to COVID-19, the Virtual StoryTent matches children entering K-2nd grade with mentors for weekly, one-on-one video reading sessions.

The program duration is six weeks with one 30-45 minute session each week. Children receive new books in the mail after enrolling. During sessions, children read and chat about books with their mentor. Children earn virtual Book Bucks for every book they read - even books they read during the week! With their Bucks, children can buy prizes through the online StoryTent store. Prizes are shipped to the child’s home at no cost. The program was created by Traveling Stories.

Who is Traveling Stories? 

We are a nonprofit organization based in San Diego. We were founded in 2010 by San DIego local, Emily Moberly, and our mission is to empower children to achieve their dreams. Traditionally we have provided literacy support through in-person StoryTents at malls and farmers markets. However, due to COVID-19, we’ve expanded into virtual programs. When does the program take place? 

Here our expected program start dates for 2021: 

  • Mid February / enrollment opens  Feb 1

  • Mid April / enrollment opens  April 1

  • Mid June / enrollment opens  June 1

  • Mid August / enrollment opens Aug. 1

  • Mid October / enrollment opens Oct. 1


Does it cost money? 

Parents may apply for a scholarship or pay what they can afford between $5 and $30 per child for each 6-week program. 

Who Are the Virtual storyTent Volunteers and how are they vetted? 

Before a volunteer can be matched with a child, the must complete the following steps: 

  • Be at least 15 years old 

  • Volunteer Application 

  • Level 2 Advance Criminal Background Check - Run by Sterling Volunteers 

  • Virtual Interview with Traveling Stories 

  • 2+ Hours of Virtual Training covering topics including: 

    • Child development and engagement

    • Program Safety 

    • How to make reading fun virtually 

    • How to use the Virtual StoryTent platform 

Now that you know more about the program, here’s how to sign up! 

  1. Visit www.storytents.org/readerreglandfirst

  2. Select either: “Pay for Program” or “Apply for Scholarship” and then fill out the information 

  3. After the payment or scholarship form, you’ll be directed to the registration form: 

    1. If you’re new to the program, create a username and password for your child. They will use this every time they login to the StoryTent program.  

    2. If you’re returning, use your existing username and password. Do not create a new one. 

  4. After you submit all the registration info, hit submit! 

  5. You will receive an email 1 week before the start of your program with details about your child’s reading mentor and session.
