Help create the bright future we all want.

Invest in children’s literacy today.

Why Do We Focus on 1st-3rd Grade

  • Children who don’t learn to read by the end of 3rd grade are likely to remain poor readers for the rest of their life.

  • Millions of American children get to fourth grade without learning to read proficiently and that puts them on the dropout track.

  • The current pool of high school graduates is neither large enough nor skilled enough to supply our nation’s workforce, higher education, leadership and national security needs.

  • Low-income fourth graders who cannot read proficiently are much too likely to become our nation’s lowest-income, least-skilled, least-productive, and mostly costly citizens of tomorrow.

Change the Trajectory with a Monthly Gift

With intervention and support in early grades, children can become strong proficient readers! A monthly donation to Traveling Stories helps make this possible.

A gift of at least $25/month will fund one-on-one reading sessions between a child and a trained reading mentor every week. During these virtual sessions, children are introduced to new books and receive individualized support that helps them grow their reading level and confidence.

The impact Traveling Stories had on my life and my relationship with reading and books was huge and sent me in the right direction.

What were my reading skills like before Traveling Stories? It was hard for me to read to comprehend and it took a lot for me to get through just one book. But after Traveling Stories helped, it was easier. Words flowered, pictures developed as I read, and overall it was just a smoother and more enjoyable experience.

My attitude toward reading? It was a hate relationship before the StoryTent. It was a chore, a hassle, and overall I just didn’t like it at all. After I joined Traveling Stories and found my love for reading, [reading] was fun and more of a treat to myself.

Why 3rd Grade

Reading Levels Matter

“The bottom line is that if we don’t get dramatically more children on track as proficient readers, the United States will lose a growing and essential proportion of its human capital to poverty, and the price will be paid not only by individual children and families, but by the entire country.”

- Annie E. Casey Foundation

Inspiring Change

Low literacy levels make kids feel isolated and hopeless. At school, assignments meant to educate end up reinforcing fears that they aren’t good enough. But we know that’s not true. We believe in kids even when they can’t believe in themselves. Then we equip kids with literacy and life skills so that they can turn their dreams into reality.

Our world has been built around the written word. All kids should have the ability to read in order to get ahead. I give so that one more kid can learn to love reading and hopefully in the future, be able to create opportunities for themselves.

"We believe literacy is a fundamental piece to make a difference in our community."

“As a new mom, I don’t have the luxury of time to give volunteering in person - or even virtually - right now. However, I am privileged enough to give a small financial gift on a monthly basis to Traveling Stories. Literacy is so incredibly important and a gift that can return dividends in a child’s life. Reading leads to greater ability in the classroom, but academically and in creative pursuits. Obviously this then lends to greater opportunities in life. I’m proud of my decision to give to a local nonprofit, where I know my donation is impacting the area community and also the world.
