“The Sockers share in Traveling Stories’ commitment increasing childhood literacy in San Diego,” said Craig Elsten, Chief Marketing Officer at the San Diego Sockers. ”We’re excited to partner with them in this effort both now and moving forward.”

To kick off the partnership, the Sockers’ launched a sweepstake that will give one fan and a friend the chance to meet Landon Donovan and attend the last home game of the season on April 13.

Anyone may enter the sweepstakes. $10 gives you one chance to win. Additional donations provide more chances to win. Every dollar donated will go to Traveling Stories to support their StoryTent programs for kids across San Diego County.

In the U.S., 82% of kids in low-income families cannot read proficiently by the 4th grade. Of these kids, 2/3s will end up in jail or on welfare (NAEP, Annie E. Casey Foundation). Traveling Stories is changing that for thousands of kids every year. Funds raised from the sweepstakes will give kids the chance to fall in love with reading for the first time.

Those who enter the charity sweepstakes will have the opportunity to win the following grand prize:

  • Meet-n-greet with Landon Donovan at the game on April 13th for you and a friend
  • SD Sockers Jersey
  • Two tickets to the April 13th game
  • $25 gift card to Phil’s BBQ

The sweepstakes will end on April 7th during the game’s half-time. The winner will be announced after the third quarter. The winner does not need to be present to win. To enter the sweepstakes and to view full contest rules, click here to enter to win!

To further support children’s literacy in San Diego, players from the Sockers will volunteer to read with kids at Traveling Stories’ StoryTent program on April 6th at 10 am at the City Heights Farmers’ Market. The event is open to the public. The StoryTent is a free literacy program for children between two and 12 years old. To learn more visit or call (619) 269-0438.

The Sockers also invite families to attend the game on April 7th for Traveling Stories Day. Every child in attendance who is 12 years old and younger will receive a free book while supplies last. Books will be provided by Traveling Stories with support from local comic book publisher, IDW Publishing. Tickets to the game are available online at

“We are so grateful for the support of the San Diego Sockers,” said Emily Moberly, Founder/CEO of Traveling Stories. “They truly care about the San Diego community and helping kids fall in love with reading.”
