How extraordinary that our Volunteer of the Month be none other than Austin McKinney! His father, Damian KcKinney of McKinney Capital is a good friend and supporter of Traveling Stories. We love how we’ve connected with our sponsor so much that his own son is now a regular Reading Role Model. And what an inspiring one at that!

Traveling Stories: Austin, you work in early childhood education and have your own nonprofit as well. Can you tell us about your nonprofit, your passion behind it, and where we can find more information?

Austin McKinney: My passion and hopes behind my online nonprofit are to create a world of total acceptance and understanding of others who have different abilities and to bring the able-body population together with the disabled. By doing this, it will help out with social/emotional problems such as bullying, violence, neglect, child abuse, academic help, and so on. My online business, Educating Others With A Purpose (EOP) offers helpful and supportive sites and community-based services where visitors can learn about the differences we all have or that we share. To find my awesome website, you can go to to find all of the amazing stuff!

TS: Why did you choose to volunteer with Traveling Stories and will you share a favorite memory with us from your time here?

Austin: I chose to volunteer with Traveling Stories because I wanted to learn how children read and discover a little about their levels or abilities. I was eager to learn about children who came from impoverished neighborhoods and how I could be an agent of change. As a preschool teacher, reading with Traveling Stories has improved how I can get the kids involved in reading.

TS: What is your favorite children’s book and why?

Austin: Goodnight Moon, I like this book because of its pictures and easy words to read. Ever since I was a kid, big words were a challenge for me.

TS: If you could travel anywhere in the world today, where would you go and why?

Austin: There is so much in the world that I want to see and offer my help and services. I would love to go down south to the islands of Australia and Tasmania or Belize. I would go to Tasmania due to their weird and odd-looking animals. I always love to study animals and their behavior. I also like tropical islands because of the cool weather.

TS: Please share with us a favorite quote that inspires you.

Austin: I like two quotes that come from Jimmy Dean and Albert Einstein:
“I can’t change the direction of the wind, but I can adjust my sails to always reach my destination” and “Strive not to be a success, but rather to be of value.”

Thank you, Austin! We appreciate you!
