WHY DONATE TO TRAVELING STORIES?

There are many literacy programs in San Diego! Ours is different in that it directly impacts those who need it the most, before it’s too late to make a significant change. Traveling Stories gets kids to fall in love with reading before the 4th grade.

Why do we pick the 4th grade? Kids learn to read up to the 3rd grade, from the 4th grade on they read to learn. According to the NAACP, children who are not proficient readers by the 3rd grade are 13 times more likely than their peers to not graduate!

“About 2/3 of students who cannot read proficiently by the end of 4th grade will end up in jail or on welfare.”

Traveling Stories is a 501(c)(3) non-profit corporation (ID# 32-0298884) dedicated to outsmarting poverty one book at a time.

Nothing screams success such as when a reader ages out and becomes a volunteer with our programs. Volunteers become leaders by reading to younger kids, those who standout earn extra responsibilities by becoming StoryTent Captains.

excited about book bucks

Financial Literacy

Teach kids financial literacy skills so that they can grow up to be wise money managers.

Direct Impact

We are already seeing kids negotiate their way to their coveted prize, bargain among themselves to trade book bucks for toys, and when we see kids saving up enough book bucks to buy bigger ticketed items such as a skateboard then we know they are building up money management skills.

parent reading with children

Parent Engagement

Fund seminars that equip parents to promote reading at home.

Direct Impact

Children who are read-to five times a week or more, have a richer vocabulary than children who are not read to. They also have a better understanding of grammar and sentence structures.

engaged family

Home Libraries

Fund book giveaways in low-income communities & help children build libraries at home.

Direct Impact

Children growing up in homes with at least twenty books get three years more schooling than children from bookless homes. When kids fall in love with their book, we let them take them home, especially the longer chapter books. We thrive in the mentality of abundance where kids develop confidence in their future without fear of scarcity.
